Goodwin Colquitt-Craven

John Scrope Colquitt’s daughter Georgina, inherited the family collection of  books, miniatures and portraits on the death of her mother Anne Lewen in 1848. She went to live with her Aunt Bridget Parke (John Scrope’s sister) in a grand Georgian terraced  house in  Cheltenham with five servants. She died a wealthy woman in 1879 at the age of 78 and left her family portraits to her cousin Goodwin Colquitt-Craven.  Assuming that the paintings did find their way to Brockhampton Park, residence of the Colquitt-Craven family, they were very likely to have hung in the house. Goodwin died ten years later and Brockhampton Park passed to his son Fulwar John Colquitt-Craven. Unfortunately, he died six months later at the age of 41, heart-broken after his wife had abandoned him and his five children, and the estate passed in January 1890 to his sixteen year old son Lewis Fulwar John Colquitt-Craven. The estate was divided between Henry de la Beche Dillwyn of Swansea, Wales, a lawyer and brother of Fulwar John’s estranged wife, Lady Arabella Buchanan of Craigend Castle, Stirling, Scotland, Fulwar John’s sister and Gerald Craven Ricardo, a distant cousin who served in the 14^th Hussars in India. The family portraits either went to Swansea in Wales or to Stirling in Scotland. The second is the most likely as Arabella was a close relation to Georgina, John Scrope’s daughter and is mentioned in her will.

Brockhampton Park

This is Fulwar John Colquitt-Craven’s story.

The dashing Grenadier Guard, Captain Fulwar John Colquitt-Craven married Sarah Dillwyn, known as “Essie”, at a grand society wedding at St Paul’s Church, Sketty in Swansea in 1873. Georgina Colquitt probably attended that wedding. Essie was from a famous Swansea family. Her grandfather Henry de la Beche was a famous geologist, her father Lewis Llewelwyn Dillwyn, was mayor of Swansea and a Radical MP. Her sister Amy was a novelist, businesswoman and a defender of women’s rights. Amy had had a fiancé who had died a few years previously and she was jealous that her sister was happily married. Essie and Fulwar John had five children but Essie fell in love with an Irish actor called Richard Packenham and she abandoned her husband and five children and fled with the actor to South Africa where her daughter Oonagh was born. The couple never married and the daughter was never recognized by the family. The Dillwyn family employed a detective to find her and Amy travelled to South Africa to persuade her sister to return. But Sarah was infatuated with her “dear Dick” and cut herself off from the Dillwyns. The heartbreak proved too much for her husband, Fulwar John Colquitt-Craven, who took to drink and died in 1890 at the age of 41. Two years later Amy found her sister dying in bleak lodgings in Coventry, she had joined a company of travelling actors. There was no sign of the lover for whom she had sacrificed everything. Essie died in 1892 at the age of 40.  It would appear that Essie’s five children did not have a happy childhood and spent periods of time with their Aunts Arabella in Scotland and Amy in Wales.

La familia Dillwyn empleó a un detective para buscar a Essie y Amy viajó a Africa del Sur para convencer a su hermana que volviese pero Essie estaba encaprichada con su querido “Dick” y cortó todas las relaciones con los Dillwyn. Fulwar John Colquitt-Craven no pudo superar el dolor y se echó a la bebida y murió en 1890 a la edad de 41 años. Dos años más tarde Amy encontró a su hermana muriéndose en una casa de pobres de Coventry donde se había unido a un grupo de actores ambulantes. No había rastro de su amante para quien lo  había sacrificado todo. Essie murió en 1892 a la edad de 40 años. Según parece, los cinco hijos de Essie no tuvieron una infancia feliz y estuvieron repartidos entre las casas de sus tías Amy y Arabella en Galés y Escocia.
