Memorials of the Peninsular War

El historiador británico David Bromley ha hecho referencia al monumento de La Cruz del Inglés en su libro: "Register of Memorials of the Peninsular War"

SACRED / TO / THE MEMORY OF / JOHN SCROPE COLQUITT ESQRE / LIEUT COLONEL IN HIS BRITTANIC / MAJESTY’S 1ST REGT OF FOOT GUARDS / WHO DIED IN SEVILLE THE 5 OF / SEPTEMBER 1812 AGED 37 YEARS / OF A FEVER BROUGHT ON IN / CONSEQUENCE OF EXCESSIVE / FATIGUE DURING THE MARCH TO / SEVILLE, AND OF THE GREAT / EXERTIONS WHICH HE MADE / WHILST GALLANTLY LEADING / ON HIS BATTALION TO THE / ATTACK ON THE BRIDGE / OF TRIANS, ON THE 27 OF AUGUST / 1812.

Note:  A new memorial in the form of a Pedestal tomb with Cross erected in May 2012. (Inscription is identical to the headstone above).  (Internet image).

Named on Memorial Panel VI: Royal Military Chapel, Wellington Barracks, London. (M.I.) (Destroyed by a Flying Bomb 1944)
Ensign 14 May 1794. Lt and Capt 25 Oct 1797. Capt and Lt Col 14 Sep 1809.
Served in the Peninsula with 2nd Battalion Sep 1810 - Apr 1811 and 3rd Battalion Apr 1811 - Sep 1812. Present at Cadiz, Barrosa (severely wounded) and Seville (led the attack on the capture of Seville, severely wounded, Mentioned in Despatches, and died of his wounds 5 Sep 1812). His brother Capt and Lt Colonel Goodwin Colquitt served with the regiment at Waterloo and was awarded the CB.
