 The Colquitt family resided in the Mount Pleasant district of Liverpool, which as its name suggests, was an area for the more affluent members of Liverpool society. The family made their money as officers of the Customs at Liverpool, which was one of the most important British ports at the time and was very much involved in the slave trade. Scrope Colquitt, John Scrope Colquitt's grandfather, was an important person in his day. In 1753 he was bailiff of the city of Liverpool and was one of the main doners for Liverpool Infirmary in 1845. In gratitude, a street was named after him and Colquitt Street still exists today.

La familia Colquitt residía en el barrio de Mount Pleasant (Monte Agradable) que, como su nombre sugiere, era una área para los miembros más pudientes de la sociedad de Liverpool. La familia ganó dinero como oficiales de la aduana de Liverpool, uno de los puertos británicos más importantes en esos tiempos y que estaba muy implicado en el comercio de esclavos. Scrope Colquitt, el abuelo de John Scrope Colquitt, fue un personaje importante en su tiempo. En 1753 fue alguacil  de la ciudad de Liverpool y fue uno de los principales donantes del nuevo hospital de Liverpool en 1845. En gratitud, le nombraron una calle y esta calle aún existe hoy.
